Now supporting L2TP/IPSec

Up until now ULS has has always made use of PPTP for remote VPN access. Over time this has showed to be remarkably reliable, save for one problem: Quite a number of remote networks behind NAT failed. L2TP/IPSec works around most of these problems.

The ULS Network Access module now fully supports L2TP/IPSec. IPSec itself normally functions in a similar fashion to PPTP, but instead of GRE it relies on ESP. IPSec however has the ability to detect NAT and switch to an alternative implementation where the ESP traffic is encapsulated inside of UDP that is handled significantly more reliable by NAT devices, thereby eliminating the problem of the NAT gateway misrouting or discarding the GRE and/or ESP traffic.

For clients that already has a (sufficiently new enough) ULS server in place this is a simple upgrade, for older servers significant work may be required. For clients with maintenance agreements this will be a free on-request upgrade.
